Characteristics of the modern rose cut
Shape : The modern rose cut retains the typical flower-like shape, where the top surface of the stone looks like a rose with concentric facets. These facets are often more symmetrical and precise than in the antique cuts.
Facets : Compared to the antique rose cut, the facets in the modern rose cut are arranged more evenly and precisely. The modern rose cut typically includes between 24 and 32 facets arranged in multiple rings to allow for better light reflection.
Depth : The modern rose cut has a controlled depth that is often greater than the antique rose cut. This greater depth helps to capture and reflect light more effectively, giving the stone more sparkle and brilliance.
Base : A defining feature of the modern rose cut is its flat base. Unlike some antique rose cuts that might have a convex bottom, the flat base of the modern rose cut allows the stone to be incorporated into a setting in a more stable manner.
Shine and brilliance : Due to the more precise arrangement of the facets and the greater depth, the modern rose cut achieves a higher brilliance and a more intense sparkle. This is achieved through the ability to optimally refract and reflect the light.
Processing : The modern rose cut uses advanced cutting techniques and tools that allow for more precise and uniform faceting. This results in a more consistent shine and better light refraction.
Application : The modern rose cut is often used for a variety of gemstones, including diamonds, and is found in both traditional and modern jewelry design. It is valued because it combines the characteristic shape of the rose cut with the advantages of modern cut shapes.
Comparison with the antique rose cut
- Precision : The modern rose cut is more precise and uniform, resulting in better light reflection and brilliance.
- Sparkle : The improved cutting technique and greater depth result in a more intense sparkle compared to the antique rose cut.
- Base : The flat base of the modern rose cut allows for a more stable integration into jewelry settings, which was often not the case with antique rose cuts.
- Craftsmanship : While the ancient rose cut was often done by hand and had a certain degree of irregularity, modern cuts benefit from computer-aided technologies and advanced cutting techniques.
