cabochon cut vs. faceted cut
The main difference between cabochon cut and faceted cut lies in the way the gemstone is cut and the resulting optical effects. Here are the key differences:
cabochon cut
Shape : The cabochon cut gives the stone a smooth, domed surface with no facets. It typically has a convex shape that can be round or oval.
Appearance : The cabochon cut gives the stone a smooth, shiny surface, often described as "wet" or "glassy." This cut emphasizes the natural color and pattern of the stone rather than maximizing brilliance or light reflection.
Uses : The cabochon cut is often used for stones that are particularly beautiful in their natural form, such as opals or certain types of jasper and turquoise. It is also used for stones that have many inclusions or beautiful irregularities.
Processing : The cabochon cut is less laborious and takes less time than the facet cut. It is mainly cut and polished to achieve a smooth, round shape.
faceting
Shape : The faceting cut consists of many flat, geometric surfaces or "facets" cut into the surface of the stone. These facets are precisely arranged to optimally reflect light.
Optics : Faceted stones shine and sparkle due to the many facets that refract and reflect light in different directions. The faceted cut maximizes the brilliance and fire of the stone.
Uses : Faceting cuts are often found on valuable gemstones. They are particularly popular for their ability to capture and reflect light.
Machining : Faceting is more complex and time-consuming. It requires precise grinding and a lot of practice to position each facet precisely and ensure maximum light reflection.
In summary: The cabochon cut emphasizes the natural beauty and color of the stone with a smooth surface, while the facet cut aims at brilliance and light reflection and is therefore more complex.
